AIDS ALABAMA, INC.
AIDS Alabama, Inc. was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1986, initially focusing on serving individuals with HIV. In 1988, the organization received a grant from the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment and trend analysis for people living with HIV in the greater Birmingham area. This foundational research, involving various community and healthcare stakeholders, shaped many of the organization's enduring relationships and resources, as well as its methodologies for HIV prevention. Since 1993, AIDS Alabama has been providing housing and supportive services to HIV-positive Alabamians, evolving into the largest HIV/AIDS service provider in the state and the nation's only statewide AIDS Service Organization. Under the leadership of former CEO Kathie Hiers, the organization expanded its reach to serve all 67 counties in Alabama through a hub-and-spokes model. AIDS Alabama is dedicated to empowering people with HIV/AIDS to live healthy, independent lives and actively works to prevent the spread of HIV. Its comprehensive approach includes services for low-income individuals and families, addressing needs across various demographics, including the LGBTQ+ and Black communities. The organization specializes in providing critical life-sustaining services, including extensive housing programs such as emergency shelter, permanent, and transitional housing. It also operates the state's only facility for individuals living with HIV who are also diagnosed with a severe mental illness, which functions similarly to a nursing home, and a residential substance abuse program. Beyond direct care, AIDS Alabama is a significant grant administrator for federal and state funds, and a leading provider of prevention education services across Alabama, actively engaging in advocacy to improve federal and state policies impacting those affected by HIV/AIDS.
