Allegheny Health Network
Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is a non-profit, 14-hospital academic medical system based in Pittsburgh, serving Western Pennsylvania and parts of New York, Ohio, and West Virginia. It was formed in 2013 when Highmark Inc., a Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance carrier, acquired the West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS). The facility at 320 East North Avenue is Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), the flagship hospital of the network, which has been in operation since 1885. AGH is a 576-bed quaternary care and educational hospital and was the first in Pennsylvania to be designated as a Level 1 shock trauma center. The hospital is a major academic medical center, serving as a clinical campus for Drexel University College of Medicine and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. AHN and AGH are committed to providing a wide range of medical services and have invested significantly in facilities, programs, and technology to enhance patient care. As a major hospital, Allegheny General offers a comprehensive spectrum of medical services and specialties. Senior care is a dedicated service line within the hospital, with a Division of Geriatrics that provides both inpatient and outpatient services. A key feature of their senior care is the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP), which is designed to prevent delirium and functional decline in hospitalized older adults. This program utilizes a team of elder life specialists and trained volunteers to provide services such as cognitive stimulation, exercise and mobilization, feeding assistance, and hearing and vision aids. The HELP program at AGH has been recognized as a Center of Excellence by the American Geriatrics Society. In addition to specialized geriatric care, senior patients at AGH have access to the full range of the hospital's resources and advanced medical treatments.
