Allegheny General Hospital

Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), the flagship academic medical center of Allegheny Health Network (AHN), has been a cornerstone of the Pittsburgh community since its chartering in 1882. Initially a 50-bed infirmary in what was then Allegheny City, AGH has grown into a 552-bed quaternary care facility and a major referral center for complex medical cases. The hospital has a rich history of innovation, being the first in Pennsylvania to be designated a Level 1 Trauma Center and the first in the northeastern United States to establish an aeromedical service, LifeFlight. Throughout its history, AGH has undergone significant expansions, including the construction of one of the nation's first "skyscraper" hospitals in 1936 and the addition of the Snyder Pavilion in 1981 and the Academic Cancer Center in 2020. Serving Western Pennsylvania and adjacent regions of Ohio, West Virginia, New York, and Maryland, Allegheny General Hospital provides a comprehensive range of medical and surgical services. It is nationally recognized for its leading programs in cancer, cardiovascular care, neuroscience, orthopedics, and transplantation. The hospital is a major teaching affiliate for Drexel University College of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine, and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, training future generations of healthcare professionals. As part of the Allegheny Health Network, which was formed in 2013 and is a subsidiary of Highmark Health, AGH is committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care and advancing medical research. The network comprises 14 hospitals and over 250 clinical locations.
