Allen Regional Transit (A.R.T.)
Allen Regional Transit (A.R.T.) is a non-profit public transportation service dedicated to serving the residents of Allen County, Kansas. Initially launched in 2020 as a program under Thrive Allen County, a prominent rural health advocacy organization, A.R.T. evolved to meet the significant transportation needs of the community. In 2024, it became an independent 501(c)(3) organization to continue its mission of providing safe, accessible, and reliable transportation. The service was established after a 2019 study by Thrive revealed that about 20% of Allen County residents lacked dependable transportation. A.R.T. aims to bridge this gap for all residents, regardless of age or income, ensuring they can access essential services and maintain their independence. A.R.T. offers two main types of services: general public transportation for in-county destinations such as grocery stores, libraries, and workplaces, and non-emergent medical and safety net transportation for appointments both within Allen County and to larger cities like Topeka, Kansas City, Wichita, and Joplin. This dual focus addresses both daily local needs and critical out-of-county travel for healthcare and social services. The organization operates with a fleet that includes a twelve-person bus, handicapped-accessible vans, and sedans to accommodate a variety of mobility needs. Their drivers are trained in passenger assistance, first aid, and defensive driving, emphasizing a commitment to passenger safety and comfort.
