Alger Marquette Community Action Board
The Alger Marquette Community Action Board (AMCAB), also known as Community Action Alger-Marquette (CAAM), is a local Community Action Agency serving residents of Alger and Marquette Counties in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Established in 1965, its mission is to improve the economic security and well-being of individuals and families by providing education, housing, and human service programs through community collaborations. The organization is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) entity that administers various government programs for low-income and elderly individuals, as well as preschool children and veterans. AMCAB offers a broad range of services aimed at fostering self-sufficiency and improving the quality of life for its community members. Key programs include early childhood education (Head Start, Early Head Start, Great Start Readiness Programs), weatherization assistance, emergency heating and utility assistance, and tax assistance. For seniors, it provides crucial nutrition services such as congregate dining sites and home-delivered meals (Meals-on-Wheels), along with the Commodity Supplemental Food Program to offer food boxes to low-income seniors. Additionally, the agency is deeply involved in housing initiatives, providing affordable housing units and housing services like emergency housing, rapid rehousing, and prevention of housing loss for low-income and senior individuals. They also offer direct financial assistance programs, including Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), and engage in community development initiatives such as low-income residential solar programs. Eligibility for AMCAB's programs typically varies by age and income.
