Abbeville County Memorial Hospital

Abbeville County Memorial Hospital, now known as Abbeville Area Medical Center (AAMC), has a long and rich history of providing healthcare to its community since its charter was received on May 12, 1919. The first hospital opened on July 1, 1920, in the former Ferguson-Williams College building, which was named in memory of soldiers from Abbeville County who served in World War I. Due to growing needs, a second 52-bed hospital was constructed and opened on July 17, 1966. The current facility, a 25-bed critical access hospital, opened on August 1, 2006, and was renamed Abbeville Area Medical Center to reflect its regional outreach. In a significant development, on October 1, 2023, AAMC entered into an affiliation with Self Regional Healthcare to enhance services and healthcare access for the citizens of Abbeville County and surrounding communities. AAMC offers a comprehensive range of services, positioning itself as a vital healthcare provider in the region. These services include a 24-hour emergency department, inpatient and outpatient surgery, radiology services with MRI, a wellness center, diabetes education, a wound care center, laboratory services, and extensive therapy options including physical, speech, and occupational therapy. The hospital provides specialized care through its swing bed inpatient rehabilitation program, an infusion center, and behavioral health services. The medical staff comprises board-certified primary care physicians and specialists in fields such as urology, orthopedics, podiatry, and neurology. AAMC is committed to quality and patient safety, as evidenced by its numerous Zero Harm Awards from the South Carolina Hospital Association for eliminating medical errors and hospital-acquired infections. The facility serves a broad area that includes Abbeville, Anderson, Edgefield, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, and Saluda counties. It operates as a governmental, county-owned hospital and emphasizes its commitment to the community by providing financial assistance and charity care programs.
