Access and Design (operating under M&D Enterprises of FL, Inc.) is a locally owned and women-operated construction company specializing in accessibility, mobility, and universal design for seniors and individuals with physical challenges. Founded in 2016 by Arlene Grosso and her daughter Denise Tomey, the company was born out of Arlene's desire to help caregivers and their loved ones successfully 'age in place.' Arlene notably obtained her contractor's license at age 70 after being inspired by a forum on senior entrepreneurship, making her a unique figure in the local construction industry. The facility focuses on creating safer living environments through modifications that range from simple safety additions to complex structural renovations. Both owners are Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS), ensuring that all projects prioritize the functional needs of residents while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of their homes. Their work is characterized by a commitment to 'universal design,' which aims to make spaces accessible to everyone regardless of age or ability level. Access and Design serves the greater Tampa Bay area, with a primary focus on Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. Their services include comprehensive home assessments and a wide array of modifications, such as the installation of ramps, lifts, and accessible bathrooms. By providing these specialized services, they help seniors maintain their independence and dignity within their own homes, often coordinating with out-of-area family members by providing video and photo updates of project progress.
