Their smiles show me I’ve done my job for the day! — Daisy, a nurse at Whitten Center for 26 years Whitten Center is a residential facility of the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (SCDDSN). Its purpose is to assist individuals with disabilities and their families in meeting needs, pursuing possibilities, and achieving life goals by: Addressing individual needs Encouraging choice Promoting growth in skills and abilities Facilitating social interaction and community involvement This is done in a setting with a wide range of services that encourages personal independence balanced with the need to provide a safe, secure, and supportive environment. “ I have been working at Whitten Center for 38 years. I love these residents because they put a smile on my face everyday! — Sallie, QIDP/Unit Manager for 38 years LIFE SKILLS TRAINING All individuals receive training each day in areas determined to be appropriate by the individual and his or her interdisciplinary team. The training provided may be centered on activities of daily living, prevocational needs, vocational activities, or a combination of each. The services are provided in residential units, classrooms, and workshop areas. Our therapy staff members assist with these services through the provision of adaptive devices and equipment, as needed, to maximize each individual’s abilities.
