Program overview
Virginia Medicaid provides essential health coverage to eligible residents including low-income individuals, families, children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with disabilities. You can apply online at commonhelp.virginia.gov, by phone, or through paper applications at local Department of Social Services offices.
Virginia offers several Medical Assistance Programs with different eligibility requirements based on age, income, financial resources, and other factors. Adults between ages 19-64 with income less than 138% of federal poverty level qualify under MAGI (Modified Adjusted Gross Income) rules, while individuals who are 65 or older, blind, disabled, or need long-term care services have separate eligibility pathways.
Virginia Medicaid covers comprehensive health services including doctor visits, hospital care, prescription medications, preventive care, mental health services, and long-term care services. Most members are enrolled in managed care organizations (MCOs) that coordinate care and provide additional benefits beyond traditional Medicaid coverage.
Applications are processed within 45 days (90 days if disability determination is needed). You must report changes to your information within 10 days and renew your coverage annually. If you have access to employer health insurance, you may be required to enroll in the HIPP program where Medicaid pays your employee premium share.
